Where have all the babies gone?

Feminism’s impact on American society brought about rapid social change. Traditional gender roles were swept away by this cultural revolution. Womanhood was redefined. Motherhood was dismantled and reassembled with the myth of the “supermom.” But perhaps the most obvious change that feminism produced is seen in the realm of reproduction as feminism fought for “freedom of choice.”

One of feminism’s primary goals for women was reached in the 1973 Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion. Because of this decision, women can legally end the life of their unborn child. As a result, we’ve lost over forty million babies as a nation. Four thousand pregnancies per day are ended through abortion. Did you get that? Please allow these numbers to sink in.

The total number of abortions performed since 1973 is greater than the current population of California and more than the combined populations of Wisconsin, Michigan, Minnesota, Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska, North Dakota, and South Dakota. Based on the current rate of abortion, one out of every four pregnant women will terminate her baby’s life today.

On Sunday mornings, as I see and hear the many babies filling our congregation, I am thrilled with wonder and delight as I consider the possibilities of so many little ones being raised by parents with a passion for God’s glory. What will they become? How is God going to use them in their generation? Will these little ones lead the church to a much needed reformation, to revival?

But when I consider the number surrendered to the ravages of abortion, I weep for our loss. As we remember these, pray for the little ones who remain. Pray for this next generation and the future they are stepping into. Pray for them to be led by wiser voices, courageous leaders, and godly parents. Pray for our nation to recognize God’s authority and the sacredness of life created in His image. And pray for the mother who has ended the life of her unborn child. Pray for her to find healing, true freedom, and deliverance in the redemptive work of Christ.

One day we will no longer struggle with issues of death, pain, and destruction, but we will experience eternal life. There will be no more debates over the “freedom to choose,” questions of when life begins will no longer be raised, and the sacredness of life will be respected by all. Until that day, may we remain faithful to honor and uphold our Creator’s view of life.

“Rescue those who are being taken away to death; hold back those who are stumbling to the slaughter” (Proverbs 24:11).

What will you do today to honor our Creator’s view of life?
